Students Experience life at Parliament House

Our Year 5/6 students recently enjoyed an engaging and informative excursion to Parliament House and the Centre of Democracy as part of their HASS Civics and Citizenship unit on Democracy. With the state election only a few weeks away, the visit provided a timely and authentic opportunity for students to deepen their understanding of how democracy works in practice.

Throughout the day, students walked along North Terrace, taking time to observe and discuss the statues of significant figures in South Australian history. They then explored the Centre of Democracy, where interactive exhibits supported their classroom learning. After enjoying lunch in the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Garden, students toured Parliament House with our local member, Erin Thompson. A highlight of the visit was participating in a mock debate inside Parliament, where students confidently stepped into the role of elected representatives.

We were delighted to receive the following feedback from Ms Thompson after the visit:

“I had the pleasure of hosting the Year 5/6s on a Parliament House tour this week – what a beautiful bunch of talented kids! They all spoke so confidently during the mock debate – very impressed.”

The excursion was a valuable and memorable experience, bringing students’ learning about democracy to life in a meaningful way.
